Brown Sugar Baked Granola Recipe Tips:
- OATS: Use rolled oats, not quick oats or instant oats.
- SWEETENERThis recipe calls for 1 cup brown sugar, but you can substitute some of that sugar with honey or real maple syrup: 1/3 cup brown sugar and 2/3 cup honey.
- BUTTER: You can also substitute the butter for coconut oil or vegetable oil.
- FLAVOUR OPTION :Substitute the butter for 1/2 cup of peanut butter. Just mix it in before baking, with the water and sugar.
- CHEWY OR CRUNCHY: If you like granola more chewy, then bake it for about 15 minutes. If you like it more crunchy and with more toasted oat-y flavour, bake it longer.
- GRANOLA HARDENS AS IT COOLS: Granola will harden as it cools, so don’t fret if it’s falling apart right after coming out of the oven, just leave it alone. After about 15 minutes or so of cooling, it will harden into chunks. At this point you can decide if you want clumpy granola or smaller granola, just break it up as you like.
- MORE TASTY ADDITIONS:You can add chia seeds, hemp seeds, raisins, shredded coconut, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, different nuts (like whole almonds, pecans or walnuts), flax seeds, shredded coconut (about 1/2 cup)…use your imagination!
- STORAGE: Keep in an airtight container at room temperature, in your cupboard for about 2-3 weeks (I like to use a large mason jar). No need to refrigerate, and doesn’t freeze well.
Make it a Trail Mix!
The best thing about this granola recipe is you can turn it into a homemade trail mix to take hiking and camping! Here are some delicious additions:
- Dried fruit: apricots, cherries, blueberries, apples, craisins
- Chocolate coated candy like Smarties or M&M’s
- Sunflower seeds
- Nuts:peanuts, cashews, almonds, pecans, walnuts, either toasted or untoasted. Toasted nuts pack more flavour!
