Sure, you can make a classic pecan pie but once you try this bourbon pecan pie you might not go back to the basic one again. I’ve been asked about this recipe for years and I’m finally getting around to posting it! Adding some bourbon to the filling does something magical taking an already delicious pecan filling to a whole new level.

You might be wondering: is this a boozy pie? It’s definitely not boozy. There’s only ¼ cup of bourbon and the alcohol will evaporate while the pie is baking leaving all of the flavors from the bourbon like vanilla and caramel.

I’m not one to just pour myself a bourbon, but adding it a pie? Oh, yes, please. Wait until you see – it’s so delicious. Bourbon pecan pie is a little gooey and rich with a complex flavor. It will be the hit at your next Thanksgiving or other holiday dinner!

Ingredients

For the crust, you can use my all-butter pie crust recipe which is a flaky, buttery dream. Or, make it really easy and use your favorite pre-made refrigerated dough.

Like a traditional pecan pie, you will also need corn syrup, brown sugar, melted butter, salt, cornstarch, and pecans.

For the bourbon, choose your favorite brand. With any dessert that includes alcohol it’s always best to use one that you like to drink.

Tip:You can make this a chocolate bourbon pecan pie by added one cup of chocolate chips!

PRO TIP

How to Make Pecan Pie with Bourbon

Chill:Line your pie pan with the dough and chill it while you make the filling.

Mix:Combine all of the other ingredients in mixing bowl and mix well.Pour the filling into the crust.

Bake:Bake the pie on a baking sheet (to catch any spill over) for 10 minutes at 425°F. Lower the heat to 350°F and bake it for 35 to 40 minutes longer. If the edges of the crust brown too quickly cover them with foil or a pie shield.

Why do I use two baking temperatures? It’s to ensure that the bottom of the crust cooks. Blasting it with a higher heat helps get the crust cooking!

Cool:The pie is done when it’s puffed up and just a little jiggly in the center. Remove it from the oven and let it cool completely so it fully sets up before you slice it.

Some Tips and Suggestions!

  • This bourbon pecan pie recipe is perfect for making ahead because it keeps well in the refrigerator for several days. I usually leave it out at room temperature before serving it so it’s not too cold.
  • Leftover pie will keep for several days in the fridge, too. Just keep it covered with plastic wrap.
  • Serve it with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Adding a drizzle of caramel sauce is not a bad idea either!

I love that adding just one ingredient to pecan pie changes it to a whole new thing! If you haven’t tried a slice of bourbon pecan pie you are in a for treat. It might just become your new favorite pie recipe. Enjoy!

What bourbon is best for pie? ›

Even though long baking times aren't necessary, Buffalo Trace is an excellent option for sweet treats that bake on low heat for an extended time. Pumpkin pie and cheesecake are seasonal desserts that benefit from the bump this bourbon brings, picking up the brown sugar and spice present in the whiskey.

Why is my pecan pie crust soggy? ›

Wet pie fillings + raw dough are a tricky combination. If the bottom crust doesn't set before the filling soaks in, it's going to be gummy. A metal pie pan placed on a preheated surface will set the bottom crust quickest; once cooked, the liquids from the filling above won't soak in, and as a result: no soggy bottom.

Is Crown Royal a bourbon? ›

Specifically, Crown Royal is a Canadian whisky, and even though this technically uses a bourbon mashbill (64% corn, 31.5% rye, 4.5% malted barley), bourbon can only be made in America. Though the TTB originally approved the label, they reversed their decision and forced the brand to stop using the name 'Bourbon Mash'.

What is the difference between whiskey and bourbon? ›

Generally the smoother, sweeter bourbons, such as Woodford Reserve, are a better choice for baking. But whatever you choose, be sure it's a good-quality brand with lots of flavor. If it's not something you'd want to drink, you probably won't want to eat it, either.

Can kids eat pie with bourbon in it? ›

Not enough to taste (you do taste the bourbon), and certainly not enough to harm a child, who will most likely be eating a smaller serving. It's my understanding that baking anything with alcohol in it safely evaporates (or “cooks out”) any alcoholic content.

What are common pecan pie mistakes? ›

Pecan pie has a somewhat similar set of issues—the filling can crack, the bottom can be under-baked, the filling can seep under the crust, and the nuts can be soggy. Like the pumpkin pie, the filling will crack if the pie is over-baked or cools too quickly.

What can go wrong with pecan pie? ›

Cook pecan pie too much and it'll crack and be dry. Underbake it and it will be watery and runny. You want to cook pecan pie to an internal temperature of 200°F. Use a digital thermometer to make this easy.

Why is my pecan pie so hard? ›

Bake the pie too long and the filling will become rock hard after cooling. Don't bake the pie long enough and the filling will ooze all over the place and the pie will fall apart. There are three okay ways to kind-of tell when your pecan pie is done but only ONE foolproof way to tell when your pecan pie is done.

How do you get a crispy crust on the bottom of a pie? ›

Choose the Right Rack in the Oven

Which rack you use in the oven can help ensure a crisp crust. Baking the pie on a lower rack will concentrate heat on the bottom of the pie and help the crust crisp.

Should I bake the bottom pie crust first? ›

Pre-baking is a must if you're looking for a flaky pie crust. It's especially helpful for recipes with a wet center. Recipes for most tarts, pies, and quiches call for pre-baking to ensure that the final product doesn't end up soggy.

Should I egg wash the bottom pie crust? ›

You've spent time and effort putting the pastry together, so don't sell yourself short by skipping the final step—the egg wash for the pie crust. The truth is that cream and egg washes are a simple but vital step to improving the appearance and flavor of pies and other baked goods.

What kind of bourbon do you cook with? ›

A wheated bourbon like Maker's Mark is sweeter and warmer, enhancing desserts, jams, jellies and sauces that pair with smoky flavors. Spicy, peppery high-rye offerings like Four Roses Single Barrel work well with dressings and fruit-based dishes and have the brightness to offset rich and creamy ingredients.

What is a good whiskey for baking? ›

Ruffenach says she chooses which bourbon to add to her recipes based on flavor profile. “I think about sweetness versus spice,” she explains. “My go to for most of my baking is Old Forester 86 or JTS Brown [from Heaven Hill]. If I want to have a little extra spice or punch, I might use Old Grand-Dad Bottled in Bond.”
