🤔 What is jicama?

Jicama is a root vegetable with a thin brown skin and white edible inside. Some other names for jicama are Mexican yam bean and Mexican turnip.

Though this is a jicama fry recipe, jicama doesn’t taste exactly the same as potatoes. IMHO it has a taste closer to a water chestnut with a texture similar to a pear. Jicama is only mildly sweet and works well in savory dishes.

⭐ Jicama Fries Air Fryer Recipe Benefits

This jicama snack truly ticks all the boxes. We’ve got:

  • Sweet and crispy jicama
  • A bit of heat from chile-lime seasoning (tajin fries are better than plain salted fries!)
  • Cooling and creamy yogurt
  • A touch of acidity from the lime juice
  • Floral, herby fresh cilantro goodness
  • ... and it fits many special diets (low-carb, keto, vegetarian, gluten-free, weight watchers)

Have I made you want to go out and get your hands on some jicama yet? Seriously, this might be one of my favorite air fry recipes of all time. Baked jicama fries are so delicious!

🥘 Jicama Fries Air Fryer Recipe Ingredients

Here’s your shopping list for jicama in the air fryer:

  • Jicama
  • Olive oil (or another cooking oil, like canola oil or avocado oil)
  • Tajin
  • Cooking oil spray

Specific quantities of ingredients are located in the recipe card at the bottom of the post!

Jicama can usually be found in the international produce or exotic produce section of the grocery store. Hispanic markets may also carry jicama. You can purchase it online here.

Make sure to use a non-aerosol cooking spray when air frying. Aerosol cooking sprays may damage the finish on some air fryer baskets or trays.

I developed this recipe in a 10-Quart Kalorik Digital Air Fryer Oven. The Ninja Foodi, Philips, Nuwave, Pampered Chef, Actifry, Instant Pot Vortex, Cosori, Breville, and other air fryers can also be used to air fry jicama. However, you may need to adjust the cooking time depending on the air fryer you use.

I recommend checking on the food early the first time you try a new air fryer recipe. That way you’ll never have issues with overcooking the food.

Other kitchen equipment you need include a Y peeler, and a knife or crinkle cutter for cutting the fries.

🧂 Jicama Fries Dipping Sauce

My favorite dip for jicama fries is a healthy yogurt-based cilantro lime dipping sauce. Here’s what you need to make it:

  • Regular plain yogurt (not Greek yogurt)
  • Chopped cilantro
  • Lime juice
  • Lime zest

🔪 How to Air Fry Jicama Fries

First let’s cover how to prepare jicama. Cut both ends off of the jicama, and peel all of the brown skin away. Cut the white flesh into ½-inch thick fry shapes (1.27 cm).

Put the sticks of jicama in a bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Stir gently to coat with the oil.

Mist an air fryer baking tray with the cooking oil spray. Spread the raw jicama fries in a single layer on the tray. Time to cook!

⏲️ Jicama Fries Air Fryer Time and Temp

How long do you cook jicama fries in the air fryer? What's the air fryer jicama fries temperature? Air fry jicama fries for a total of 20-25 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200C). Use the top rack position if you have an air fryer oven.

After air frying for 10 minutes, flip the jicama fries, mist with cooking spray, and air fry 10 more minutes. Check on them and remove the crispy jicama fries from the tray. Flip the fries that are not done yet, spray with oil, and air fry an additional 5 minutes.

Sprinkle the fries with tajin (or another seasoning) after cooking. The seasoned jicama fries are great on their own, or you can make a dip for them.

While the fries cook, you can whisk the yogurt, cilantro, lime juice, and lime zest together for the dip. I actually like to drizzle the dip all over the cooked jicama fries instead of dip them. However you prefer to use the jicama sauce, I hope you enjoy!

️ How long to boil jicama for fries?

These low carb jicama fries in the air fryer are no boil. Save yourself some time, because there’s really no need to boil first when making air fryer jicama fries.

🌡️ Can you freeze jicama?

Some readers have reported success with freezing raw jicama. You can cut and freeze raw jicama sticks, but let them fully thaw before trying this recipe.

Freeze jicama in single layer (not touching) on a tray lined with freezer paper or parchment paper. After the jicama fries have frozen, store them in a freezer bag with the air pressed out. Using this method will keep them from sticking together in the freezer.

Cooked jicama fries can be stored in the fridge for 3-4 days. To reheat jicama fries, spray with cooking spray and reheat on the stove or in the air fryer until crispy.

📋 Carbs in Jicama

Does jicama have carbs? One serving of air fryer jicama fries has 157 calories, 10.9 grams net carbs, and 2.3 grams protein. Jicama is a low carb vegetable (and we’re enjoying a large serving size here).

Cook oven baked jicama fries in an oven preheated to 400F (200C) for 25-30 minutes. Flip the fries on the baking sheet halfway through cooking time. Don’t forget to coat them in a bit of oil so they’ll get some browning.

How to make air fryer jicama chips?

If you’re from the UK, what I’m sharing below is a jicama chips air fryer recipe. For American-style jicama chips, cut the jicama thin and spray the chips well with cooking oil. Air fry in a single layer at 400F (200C), checking and flipping them every 3-5 minutes until crisp.

How to make a vegan jicama fries air fryer recipe?

These are vegan and dairy free jicama fries if you skip the dip. You could use another dip instead, such as ketchup or BBQ sauce. Alternatively, substitute the dairy yogurt in the jicama dip for your favorite plain plant-based yogurt.

Why are my fries not crispy in the air fryer?

Are your air fryer fries chewy? If so, they’re likely french fries made with potatoes. Air fryer jicama fries don’t get very soft like potatoes do. The advantage of this is that they are always crisp and never soggy.

What are some other jicama recipes?

Enjoyed my jicama recipe for the air fryer? You might like these other recipes with jicama: jicama slaw, jicama salad, and stew with spiralized jicama. Don’t forget that you can eat plain raw jicama as a snack too!

Can you fry jicama?

Yes, you can make deep fried jicama. However, jicama baked fries in the air fryer or oven are just as crunchy with much less oil. Why not save yourself the mess of deep frying and try air frying instead?

Instructions

  • Cut both ends off of the jicama, and peel all of the brown skin away. Cut the white flesh into ½-inch thick fry shapes (1.27 cm).

  • Put the sticks of jicama in a bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Stir gently to coat with the oil.

  • Mist an air fryer baking tray with the cooking oil spray. Spread the raw jicama fries in a single layer on the tray.

  • Put the tray in the top rack of the air fryer oven and bake for 10 minutes at 400°F (200°C). Then flip the fries over, mist them with the cooking spray oil, and bake at 400°F (200°C) on the top rack for an additional 10 minutes.

  • While the fries cook, whisk the yogurt, cilantro, lime juice, and lime zest together. Refrigerate this cilantro-lime dipping sauce while you finish the fries.

  • Pull the fries that have finished cooking off the tray. Since jicamas are not shaped like a rectangular block, some fries will naturally be smaller (and cook faster) than others.

  • Flip the fries left on the tray that are not done. Mist them with the cooking oil spray, and bake at 400°F (200°C) on the top rack for 5 more minutes.

  • When done, sprinkle your fries liberally with the tajin.

  • Drizzle the fries with the cilantro-lime dipping sauce (or use it as a dip).

  • Sprinkling on even more tajin might not be a bad idea! You could also add a squeeze of lime juice, if desired. YUM!

💭 Expert Tips from Dietitian Summer Yule

This is a level 2 recipe (transition or weight maintenance). Is jicama healthy? Jicama is a high fiber vegetable that is low calorie and packed with antioxidants.

The health value of a food always depends on the needs of the person considering it. That said, I would consider jicama to be a nutritious and healthy food for most people. I made the servings BIG here because so many of us can benefit from eating more veggies.

These air fried jicama fries would be lovely as a snack or a side dish. I think they would be great with air fryer frozen burritos or my Taco Bell beefy 5-layer burrito copycat.

You could use a full-fat yogurt in the jicama dip for a slightly higher energy snack. Seriously though, if I wanted a higher-calorie snack, I would just hog all the jicama fries to myself. Forget the whole thing about this recipe serving two. 😉

Nutrition information is for one serving of the recipe with the dip.
